What are the three board types?

Magnesium boards are inorganic boards based on magnesium cementitious materials, modified, pressed and cured; leading products reach Class A1 non-combustible under GB 8624-2012. Calcium silicate (including fiber cement) boards use silica/lime raw materials autoclaved into inorganic fire-resistant boards. Gypsum boards use plaster cores — paper-faced gypsum board is common, light and low-cost.

Fire performance compared

Fire safety is the top selection criterion. Magnesium and high-density calcium silicate boards can reach Class A non-combustible (A1/A2 per test reports). Standard paper-faced gypsum board is Class B retarded-combustible (fire-rated gypsum systems achieve resistance through assembly design, but the core dehydrates and powders at high temperature). Select materials per GB 55037-2022 and obtain third-party reports.

Moisture, strength and workability

Magnesium boards are moisture-proof with good toughness and screw-holding, sawable and nail-able — suited to bathrooms and basements. Calcium silicate is hard but relatively brittle with more cutting dust. Gypsum fears moisture, warping and molding in damp areas. Price: gypsum lowest, calcium silicate mid, magnesium slightly higher for its performance grade — but better lifecycle value with less rework.
